Barry Manilow / 50's Week
First of all, how are you gonna get on national TV and say out loud that you don't really know who Barry Manilow is??? Hello!!! Straight up, here's who I feel were the bottom three: Bucky, Kelly and Lisa.
Mandisa chose a great song and did a good job, but I just don't think she's got the "idol" image going on. Is it that she's a little old for it, or just her appearance in general.
Bucky's performance was off-key and simply a (not great) karaoke act. Tonight's performance did nothing for me (could anything he did ever do anything for me??) --- he just needs to go home.
Paris made Peggy Lee's song her own, changing the phrasing and all. It was really an incredible performance, especially for a 17-year old. Peggy Lee would have been proud.
And Chris --- wow!! Now, Johnny Cash is a legend, but Johnny himself would have told Chris tonight "Walk the Line is no longer my song. . . it's all your's!" Chris not only made the song new, he made it better.
Katherine has a great, strong voice and is still one of my favorites. I loved her rendition tonight; she really took over the stage.
Through the magic of technology (or too much technology), I missed most of Taylor's song, but what I saw I loved! He was made to sing the music of the 50's. He's great!
Lisa, Lisa, Lisa --- tonight she sounded like she was in a high school production of "Grease". She's technically good and has a strong voice, but she just doesn't make me think she's feeling the music. She steps out on stage, belts out a song but never makes me feel it.
Little Kevin chose the perfect song for himself, but tonight is the first time I've heard him falter. It wasn't the best I've heard from him. And, we all know he's not going to win, but he still isn't in my bottom three.
Despite the messed up grill, Elliott is one of my favorites but tonight's performance was disappointing to me. I liked the song, but there was way too much vibrato and it just didn't do anything for me. I'm hoping tonight was a fluke and not a trend for him.
What was Kelly Mae Clampett wearing?? I would have thought it impossible to make her tiny butt look huge, but she managed to with that wardrobe choice!! And, why does she sound like Inspector Clouseau when she sings "searching"?? It's a little like Celine Dion and her "power of lerve". Sexy??? Well, if young and blonde equals sexy (which I guess it does for Simon), then she was. . . but she wasn't.
And tonight they allowed Ace to prove he's nowhere near the bottom three by letting him close the show with an absolutely awesome performance. Wow, wow, wow!!
So, for my sister I'll name my top five, in order: Chris, Ace, Katherine, Paris and Taylor. And if America doesn't send Bucky home this week. . . well, I don't even want to think about that.

Barry Manilow week????? Why didn't they sing any of his songs?????
Time for Bucky to go and Kevin.
I've been following your blog since your first post, and I seem to see a common trend of telling your readers it is about someones overall ability. However, you seem to be hung up on the appearance of Mandisa. Isn't supposed to be about her ability? It kinda makes me wonder what the true "idol" image is... does she have to be super skinny as a female contestant? I think Mandisa amazing and that she shouldn't be judged because of her "appearance in general" it would be good for our youth to have a role model with some meet on her bones...
2 words : Chris ROCKS!
After that song I can't believe Bucky survived???
I was ready to see Kevin go.
.... I have been ready for some time now....
Lisa: American Idol...probably not, but she will be on a Broadway stage someday I'll bet.
Peggy, I'm still laughing about the grill comment!
Lets face it, at this point every single finalist surely has a strong shot at a recording contract. Except maybe Bucky. Don't get me wrong, I like Bucky and I really enjoyed some of his PREVIOUS performances. I'll look for him singing in a bar the next time I'm in Rockingham.
Did I hear that next show's theme is the 21st Century? Should be interesting.
I have never watched this show before this year and I blame my 9 year old daughter for infecting me!
Sure is fun!
Just love that we're on opposite coasts and our equal interpretation of Lisa was that she belongs in GREASE! Too dang funny. Love looking to see whether we are even remotely close in our opinions!
